Early adopters have already been reaping the benefits of AI, but 2019 stands as the year that technologies such as AI, machine learning, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and predictive analytics move from a novelty to standard practice for businesses in a wide variety of industries. Gartner predicts AI to deliver $1.9 tn of benefits to business in 2019, while at the same time the AI jobs market is predicted to grow to 23 million positions by 2020.
Here are some other key trends from Gartner’s 2019 report:
In 2019, the cloud-based enterprise software market is forecast to reach $427 billion, up 7.1 percent from $399 billion in 2018.
As organisations continue to require more scalable solutions to handle the greater levels of data processing, more companies continue to adopt cloud-based solutions. IDC found that banking, discrete manufacturing and professional services spent the most on cloud adoption in 2018 and this trend looks to continue.
Gartner expects increased growth in integration platform as a service (iPaaS) and application platform as a service (aPaaS).
Infrastructure will continue to be an important sector into the future, particularly with the burgeoning 5G networks, which will require entirely new systems and infrastructure to facilitate the transition.
Worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.79 trillion in 2019, an increase of 1.1 percent from 2018.
As more industries undergo their digital transformation as technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) become ever more powerful and accessible to not just the largest organisations. While the USA still dominates in terms of spending, other nations are seeing rapid growth in spending, particularly China, Japan, the EU and Brazil.
“The choices CIOs make about technology investments are essential to the success of digital business. Disruptive emerging technologies, such as AI, will reshape business models as well as the economics of public- and private-sector enterprises”John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner.
